Slapping the book closed, Nakamaru decides that he wants that kind of romance; that kind that will make him sigh dreamily and make him float high pass cloud nine above.

And so, he reaches for his mobile phone.

“Nakamaru-kun, shit! Don't tell me I forgot to meet you again?”

It takes Nakamaru a while to answer, as he’s soundlessly laughing himself to scorn at just how ridiculously his heart is beating just from hearing his name dripping off Taguchi’s tongue, artfully moving between his lips.

“Let’s go for a walk”, he eventually says.

“Now?” Taguchi asks, “look at the time. It’s late night”.

Nakamaru hums in ponder, supposing he could wait. But then he looks at the moon big and tempting in the sky and he somehow feels courageous, ready to shove his virtuous patience aside. After all, he has been using that same patience to drop signs here and there: taking the same dance class, planning dates for survival games – which Taguchi completely casually forgets, and then there’s that particular treat to lunch in Shibuya - that on a normal occasion would cause his heart and wallet to wail.

“I have something to tell you”, he says.

“And you can’t say it now?”

I want to see your face, he wants to tell him.

But instead, he replies, “I could. But I rather not”.

The phone line goes quiet, and all Nakamaru can hear is the nervous pounding of his heart. He tightens his grip around his mobile phone, trying hard to listen beyond his growing panic, wondering where his courage just seconds ago has ditched him to, leaving him nothing but jittery.

“Twenty minutes”, Taguchi says at last, “I’ll be at the pub by the crossroads”. Nakamaru cringes at hearing an unmistakable smile in Taguchi’s voice.

He knows.

Clicks. Dial tone.

Taguchi knows.

And so Nakamaru finds himself staring at his phone until he realises only 15 minutes is left. So he grabs his coat, his wallet and the book he reads and heads to the door. But just before he leaves, he makes one final attempt to reaffirm his resolve – so he takes out his harmonica and blows a melody, imagining himself being musical notes on a sheet soaring to those long arms of Taguchi’s.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

That’s the kind of romance he wants; that one that sweeps him off his feet and makes him sigh blissfully like that silly couple in his book.

But yet again, as he drives down the empty street, he supposes he could have waited at least until morning. But then his phone beeps and he reads Taguchi’s message saying;

Waiting for you.

Nakamaru presses more gas.

Waiting, is no longer an option.

...

hmm the open-ending isn't how I had originally pictured it, but after making a few shifts, it worked out like this >< I still hope it was a piece to your liking ><
